Happy New Year

It's 2013 and I'm hoping for a good one. This past year has been one of my toughest and I need a reprieve.

2013 gives me a lot to look forward to.  We'll be heading to California and the beach for a week in February.  Maybe I'll get Katie potty-trained before her third birthday in May.  I hope by June to have hit my goal weight and to be running a marathon.  This summer, we'll go to Park City for a week of hiking and fun.  DH is planning on a trip to the Northwest for his Daddy Trip in July.  Come fall, I'll have seven kids in school, with Harmony starting kindergarten.

I have several goals for the year, but the highest priority is to get my fitness back in order. One of the worst parts about the hyper-, then hypo-thyroidism I've dealt with for the past six months is that all the progress I made in the spring and early summer disappeared. I lost 30 lbs. after Cami was born in February and was ten pounds away from my goal weight. Then I gained 34 back, and some of it very quickly. One of the medications I was on for symptoms caused me to gain 20 lbs in six weeks. I was so happy to say goodbye to that particular medication! Blessedly, my thyroid levels are almost back to normal and I'm starting to feel like myself again. Welcome back, self.   I'm crossing my fingers and hoping that my Hashimoto's disease will fade into the background of my life again and be nothing more than a minor annoyance.  That's all it was for nine years, after all.  I'd settle for another nine years.

me this summer -- hoping to get back there again!

With the help of a dear friend who was willing to come twice a week for an hour at a time to stay with my younger four, I was able to keep up with the exercising in October and November, though at a much lower level. I was extremely hypothyroid and even running a half mile at a time was difficult (muscle weakness is one symptom), so I mostly walked. A bump in my thyroid dose in mid-November, though, meant that in December, I was able to have the strength to run. I'm up to two to three miles at a time again and though it's not where I was last summer, when I ran a half-marathon, it's something to be grateful for and proud of. And it should be enough to get me toward my second goal, which is to train for and run a marathon.  I've signed up for the Utah Valley Marathon on June 8th -- want to join me?  I'm going to use Hal Higdon's training program and start at the end of the month.

I've also signed up for Weight Watchers and hope to make slow and steady progress on losing the weight while I up the mileage.  Wish me luck.

My other goals:

*  Learn to enjoy cooking and try a new recipe once a week.
*  Blog once a week or more
*  Catch up on my family history books for 2010, 2011, and 2012.  I'm a bit behind.  =)
*  Continue daily scripture study and kneeling prayers

What are your goals for the year?  What are you looking forward to?
